Filmd is an online video streaming platform for film industry professionals, cinephiles, film aficionados, and art lovers. Filmd showcases 30 works each month as an online exhibition experience. Filmd is a project that I made for my final project of my MA in Digital Media Design at Birkbeck, University of London.
For my final project, I created Filmd as a business idea and designed high fidelity prototypes to potentially be taken into development. I researched the video streaming platform industry with competitor analysis, conducted user interviews and research, defined my target audience and also tested my design thinking with innovate business strategies to create a new experience and provide access to watch under-represented and artists’ moving image work online.
My Design process started with hand-drawn mockups of each page of the site, building wireframes and a sitemap to understand the information architecture. Then, I conducted interviews with my target audience, compiled a collection of common pain points and areas to consider. The overall consensus was that the site needed to be relevant, innovative, show unique work and have a highly curratorial approach to content.
As part of my design thinking, I brainstormed the factors that the video streaming platform already functions with, conducted competitor reviews and created a business strategy that is geared towards educational institutions and students with an emphasis on artists’ moving image works and work from national archives and galleries.
The home screen is designed with an exhibition in mind, titled “What’s On” the featured films of the programme are represented with bold film stills and descriptive text. The features include highlights from the programme, featured films, a director’s spotlight and click through links to archived past exhibitions.
Video Player & Archive
The video player page also highlights the director of the film, providing an educational background to the programme and work. The archive is important for users to learn from past programmes and see selected works and programme notes.
The design is responsive to multiple devices, enlarging the film stills on mobile and simplifying the film description allows the viewer to have a more visual viewing experience.
The three main screens of the app, the Archive lets the user click on past programmes to read about films which previously screened on Filmd, the What’s On page allows the viewer to find featured films and easily watch them on their mobile device. The Upcoming page gives users the chance to watch trailers and get a sneak preview of what’s to come.
